The Appeal Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State has declared the 2007 Action Congress of Nigeria gubernatorial candidate in Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, as the winner of the 2007 governorship elections in the state after a prolonged legal tussle between Dr. Fayemi and the former governor of the state, Engr. Segun Oni, the appelate court ruled in favour of the ACN and declared him winner. This came after the two political rivals had conducted another re-run election in ten local governments which apparently returned the former governor Segun Oni to power. The Action Congress proceeded to the Appeal Court to fight its cause.
With this pronouncement, Ekiti State has joined other states such as Anambra, Edo, Ondo and Adamawa states, where there will be no governorship election next year.
